Halloween 2019

Where is this year going?  I feel as though September skipped us and October came through even faster.  I'm starting to see Christmas decorations going up in the neighborhood.  Personally, I like to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas.  When I think about Thanksgiving I think about all things orange, yellow, brown, pumpkins, cornucopias, and turkeys.  It's really hard for me to combine that holiday with Christmas but to each his own, I guess.

This year for Halloween my daughter didn't want to be her usual cutesy princess.  She wanted to go as something scary.  We didn't plan on getting her a costume this year but when I saw the zombie ballerina at the Halloween store I couldn't resist.  It's perfect for a girl who already takes professional dance lessons.  My son kept the same costume as last year.

I took my daughter to her school's Trunk or Treat but my son had to miss it because of Boy Scouts but she was more than happy to share her candy with him.

Because the weather was bad;  rain and heavy winds and a tornado watch, Trick-or-Treating in our community was changed from October 31 to November 2.  It was nice to have it on a Saturday.  The kids dressed up and we walked around the neighborhood.  They ended up with more candy then we know what to do with.  I'm not even sure I will allow them to keep it all.

Happy Homemaker Monday - November 4, 2019

Wow, I haven't done this in about a year or two.  I really enjoyed doing these, especially since it helped me stay organized and it was also fun to join in and read other posts.  This was created and is maintained by the wonderful Sandra at Diary Of A Stay At Home Mom.  I have to admit, she's my favorite blogger.  There aren't many blogs I follow these days, not like I used to, but I do hope to get back into it and find more blogs to follow.  Sandra's blog always has that warm and inviting feeling and her writing is simply just talking about her journey through being a wife, mom and homemaker.  So many blogs these days are just too formal, and want to focus on telling you how to live your life and offer advice on how to do this and how to do that and why you are doing things wrong.  I don't enjoy that, to be honest.  I love to hear about your day.  Hear about your struggles.  Your adventures.  Your experiences.  Your reasons to celebrate.  Etc.  Okay, okay, you get the point.  I'm sorry for mumbling.  Now onto this week's HHM and I hope to get back to it on a regular basis.  I don't always have all the answers filled out so I apologize for that.  Even on a Monday I'm still trying to figure out the week ahead.

Walk For Alzheimer's 2019

Today my daughter accompanied me to the walk.  This is the second year I've participated in this event and I hope to make it every year.  Last year I raised over $1,000 and was part of the Grand Champion Club.  This year I raised $350 and I'm so thankful for those who donated.

Alzheimer's is the 6th leading cause of death and there is no survivors.  It's a horrible disease that has no cure.   Since my mother was diagnosed a few years ago I've done whatever I could to raise awareness, help fund research, and learn ways on how I could try to prevent the disease.  I watch as my mother struggles every day, I see how hard it is on my father, and it's hurting the rest of my family.  Watching the woman who brought me into the world slowly lose herself is the worst feeling in the world.

My mother has trouble walking on her own, but that's how it's been since her stroke.  It's hard to understand anything she says and she's starting to have accidents more and more.  It's frustrating for her and she often cries.  I can see how exhausting it is for my father but he keeps going because she's the love of his life.  Many people forget how hard this is for the caregiver.

Those who were at the walk today had an experience with the disease of their own.  Either they were fighting with it, or they knew a loved one fighting with it, or they knew someone who lost the battle.  Some were there just to support the cause.  Seeing the hundreds of people showed me that those of us experiencing this are not alone.  There is so much support out there.  Now, if only we can find a cure.

41 YEARS YOUNG

I remember sitting on the couch with my best friend planning out the details of what I wanted to do for my 21st birthday as if it was yesterday.  When I turned 21 I was single and wondering if I'd ever be worthy of love, living at home with my parents, and a recent business school graduate realizing that I wasn't happy with the career choice I made and struggling to find a job that was suitable for me.  Later in that 21st year I fell in love with my male best friend and we made it official on his 21st birthday.

It's hard to believe that was twenty years ago.

Earlier this month I celebrated my 41st birthday.  41.  How did I get here so quickly?  I can recall certain moments on several birthdays … my 10th birthday when I was excited to be in the double digits, my 13th birthday when I was excited to finally be a teenager and given permission from my mom to wear makeup, my 18th birthday when I was considered an adult, my 29th birthday when I was pregnant and one month away from giving birth to my first child.  41 birthdays.  41 years.  So many memories.  So many experiences.  So many mistakes.  So many lessons learned.  So much growth.  I am thankful.

On my birthday I had to put in my three hours of work in the cafeteria.  My co-workers greeted me with birthday wishes.  My daughter wasn't shy about shouting to everyone it was my birthday and what age I turned.  We met my parents at the Olive Garden for dinner.  I got to choose where we went and with so many restaurant choices it was hard to decide but I went with good old Olive Garden.  Then my parents came back to the house with us where we had ice cream cake and I opened presents.  That's when I received a new laptop, which I'm typing on right now.  I needed a new laptop because my old one was just about shot.  I love it.  I've been coming up with ideas on a book and I can't wait to get it all done.  Being a writer is something I've dreamed about since I was a little girl and at 41 years old I realize that time is ticking away.  I'm ready to pursue my dream but it's having the time to sit and write, and also coming up with every detail of what to write is holding me back.  I'll get there, if Lord willing, I have the chance.

At 41 I still struggle with depression but I'm getting better at learning ways to manage it.  There are days when I wake up knowing that it's going to take all the strength to get through the day but somehow I push through.  I'm lucky to have four decades of good physical health but last year started my journey through skin cancer.  I've had three surgeries so far to remove spots on my face and there are more growing.  My dermatologist can't seem to figure out why this is happening and it's very frustrating for me.  I will be going to a Genetics Counselor in January and I'm not sure if that's going to help.  I scheduled an appointment with my primary care doctor next month to discuss other issues I've been having.  I guess it's that time when I'm feeling what getting old is all about.

I've never considered myself to be pretty, even though my husband tells me I am every day.  My weight is up more than it should be and I struggle to find motivation to get a good daily workout in.  My face, around both eyes, are covered in scars from surgery and I'm also missing some eye lashes because of it too.  I try to hide the flaws with makeup but it's not enough.  I've never spent much time worrying about my physical appearance and it shows, I guess.

Mentally I'm growing more and more every day.  I make it a point to show kindness to everyone, because I realized that I don't know what others are going through in their lives.  In a world that is filled with cruel people I want to be the one that shows kindness and compassion.  That has become a priority to me.  In school I'm always smiling and showing kindness to the children.  In my home I want my kids to know that they are loved and cared for and always joke around with them.   I've come a long way in my attitude.  My prayer life has become better and my faith is stronger.  I thank God every single day for the life I have, even in the moments when I don't feel strong enough to press on.  Without my faith I would not have any strength.

So, here I am at age 41.  Not feeling 100% my best but thankful for this life.

Just A Quick Hello

Hello friends ...

The fall weather is here.  Although, I'd prefer heat over the chillier days, but it's okay.  Fall is a great season.  Also, my birthday is in the season.  In fact, it was on the 8th of October.  I'd like to do a more thorough post about my birthday sometime, but one of the gifts I got was a brand new laptop.  I haven't had a chance to play around with it so that's what I'm doing tonight.  My old laptop only works when the charger is plugged in and it's very old.  This one gives me a fresh start and I love my husband for getting it for me.

We are definitely in life's busy season.  My daughter auditioned for The Nutcracker last Saturday and got a part with the Snowflakes.  Same as last year.  It's with Moscow Ballet Great Russian Nutcracker.  She's excited to be part of this again.  A ballerina from Moscow Ballet came to do the audition.  It was a great experience.  Every Saturday she will have rehearsal at the studio until the big show in December.

She also gets to dance in another Christmas show.  December will be here before we know it.  I can't believe how fast September went and how quickly October is passing by.

It's a quiet Friday night in my house and I'm going to go enjoy it.  Have a great weekend readers!

What Can I Do To Help?

Recently I started thinking a lot about the past.  The bad parts of my past.  I have been able to forgive and move on with it all and nothing about any of it bothers me anymore.  However, lately, it's been on my mind.  I feel it's been put back into my mind as a reminder of what I've been through, not to haunt me, but to show me that I can use it all to help others.  I feel a calling to use my experiences to reach out to those in need.  Although, can I do that?  Is it too late?  When I was in twelfth grade I took a psychology class and loved it.  My teacher came up to me during class and told me I should look into studying psychology in college.  Aside from my English teachers who loved reading my fictional writings he was the only other teacher who saw potential in me and that meant so much.  I really had an interest in becoming a psychologist but my father quickly shot that dream down when he reminded me of how bad I was in school.  He wasn't wrong.  I didn't study much and didn't apply myself, but even when I did I had an awful time remembering what I had learned.  Becoming a psychologist would mean spending many years in college for my doctorate, or at least a master's degree.  I was barely a C average student. School was not for me.

My third grade teacher was mean and ruined my thoughts on school and on myself.  She was a very miserable person and from the first day of school wasn't afraid to show which students she was going to favor and which she was going to hate.  Now as an adult I can understand she must have had something seriously wrong with her to be so cruel to children and I've given her the forgiveness.  I also hope that someone, at some point, had the nerve to stand up and report her because I certainly didn't.  As a small child who was already living in an abusive home I already thought the worst of myself.  So when a teacher called me stupid and told me I would never amount to anything I believed it.  I already believed it but her words gave me more reason to believe it.  From that point on I stopped trying.  What was the point?  I was stupid and I was never going to be anything of importance so why bother?  Yeah, now I realize how much I wish I could have handled all of this so differently.  I wish when someone told me I couldn't do something I would have proved them wrong.  But no, that's not how I was as a child.  If you told me I couldn't I believed I couldn't.  I was stupid, after all.

I hated school but I hated being at home too.  As I wrote earlier, I was in an abusive home.  I really want to be careful with what I say here because I do not want to upset my father, who had worked so hard to change.  Whatever happened in the past is completely forgiven and we've moved forward.  No matter what, I always had a solid roof over my head, plenty to eat, and all the things I needed and even selfishly wanted.  I'm also thankful to have parents that were always there.  My dad could have walked away, as many dads do, but he stuck around.  He realized his mistakes and fixed them.  But as a small child the abuse was there.  Physically and mentally. I experienced things that a small child should never have to experience.

I'm not sure if my depression is linked to any of the stuff that was going on in my childhood but for as long as I can remember I never felt happy.  I felt useless, miserable and sad all the time.  There are still days when I feel like I'm going to mentally come crashing down but I'm able to handle it better.  I no longer feel the urge to kill myself as I used to.  My faith in God has helped me through that.  I used to feel like I didn't belong here but realized that since God gave me life then He must want me here.  Although others have made fun of me for my belief they don't realize that knowing and trusting in the Lord is what keeps me going every single day.  I also realized that no matter what others think of me they aren't the ones I will be faced with at Heaven's Gate.  They are not the ones who have the final Judgement over me.  I am who I am.  I've lived through pain and suffering, I've made my own mistakes.  I'm so much of what others do not realize.  I never told many people about that third grade teacher.  I never even told my parents.  I don't speak often about the abuse I experienced and witnessed as a child.  There are so many other things I don't speak of.  But I feel like those things, even if they don't currently play a part in my life, could benefit the lives of others.  There are so many people suffering.  I want to help.

I will be 41 in a few weeks and going back to college to get a psychology degree isn't impossible and it is never too late, however, it's not something I could consider.  That's something I wish I would have gone for years ago.  I believe that's just a calling I missed.  Plus, I don't really need a piece of paper telling me I spent years learning about the minds of people.  I have the experience.  I lived the life.  I believe that, in itself, is huge.  So, what can I do?  How can I be the person to help others?  Why am I feeling this push to do something?  I don't have those answers but I've been praying about it.  God is calling me to do something, I can feel it.  I'm just patiently waiting to see where all this takes me and I'm excited for it!

The Busy Season

The picture is blurry.  It was taken indoors, with movement, and on a cell phone.  But I still love it.  My husband took this picture and texted it to me.  My son is the one with the ball.  I heard he did pretty good during tryouts.  I can't wait to watch him playing in the games.  Basketball is a new sport for our boy but I know he's going to do well and I'm already proud.  This boy has been playing baseball since the age of 5 and wants to continue playing in hopes to make it on a college team.  He also plays trumpet for the third year but I'm not sure if that's something he'll stick with once he reaches high school.  He completed cub scouts and is now in his first year with the boy scouts.  This active boy doesn't do well with just sitting still.  He'll ask to play video games but usually isn't on longer than fifteen minutes.  He'll turn on a television show and glance at it for about five minutes before going outside to play.  He wakes up with the energy and sometimes I have to plead with him to calm down.  In school he's quiet and not active at all but when he's home he's all over the place.  I shouldn't be mad about it knowing that there are a lot of boys who constantly sit around playing video games and watching television.  Seeing my kids active and not lazy is important and I'm glad it comes naturally for him.

During the school year our weeks are crazy.  If there's homework they need to do it as soon as they get home but usually they either don't have homework or have the chance to do it in school.  They come in the door and grab a snack and are usually outside to meet with friends.  I prepare dinner early so we can eat before having to run the kids to wherever it is they need to be that day.  Monday is tap, Tuesday is scouts, Friday is praise and ballet.  Lately there have been basketball open gym and tryouts thrown in there and soon practice and games will start.  Then in the spring comes baseball.  There is nothing on schedule tonight so I'm looking forward to some rest with the family.  The schedule for this weekend is already packed with plans.  I love the busyness from this season of life and am soaking it all in because someday the kids will be grown and all of this rushing from here to there will be over.  I know I'll miss it.

In the daytime while my husband is at work and the kids are in school I spend the day cleaning, grocery shopping, and spending three hours at my job in the cafeteria.  I feel rushed trying to get it all done and sometimes I feel anxiety when thinking of all that needs done.  This morning I felt a panic attack starting.  So, that's why I decided to take a break, do some deep breathing and just focus on something else for a moment.  The stuff that needs done will get done.  I have to stop worrying.  I really do enjoy the life that I live and the responsibilities I have.  It just feels disappointing when I spend so much time cleaning but then look around and notice that so much more needs done.  My kids are old enough to take care of their own messes and they do but it still doesn't feel like enough.  This too will be something that will change over time.  The dust will always come back, the floors will always need vacuumed, the dishes and laundry will always need washed ... but all of these toys will one day be gone.  The house will one day look more empty.  So I need to learn to enjoy the chaos because someday it's going to be different.

I feel guilty when I stop to write in this blog, or when I take the dog for a walk around the neighborhood, or take a moment to read or exercise.  But those are things that are important for my mental and physical health.  We all need some me time, even during the busy season.
